Charles White (American, 1918–1979)
Love Letter III, 1977
Charles White depicted the lives of black Americans for over four decades. Born in Chicago, he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and later at the Art Students League of New York. Raised in poverty and exposed to the works of other black artists and authors, he embraced using his art as commentary on social injustice and the humanity of the African American experience.
