Facsimile edition of the original 1940 Negro Motorist Green Book.

The Negro Green Motorist Book was an annual guidebook for Black road-trippers. Originally published in Harlem by Victor Hugo Green from 1936 to 1966, during the era of Jim Crow laws. Black travelers faced hardships such as white-owned businesses refusing to serve them or repair their vehicles, being refused accommodation or food by hotels, threats of physical violence and forcible expulsion from whites-only “sundown towns”. Green founded & published the Green Book to help us travel more safely. Original editions of the Green Books are in the Manuscripts, Archives, and Rare Books Division at the Schomburg Center, which holds the biggest collection of Green Books in the world.
